HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A 19-year-old Helena man faces a felony charge after he called police to report he had choked his girlfriend in an attempt to kill her.

Michael Jonathon Cain was charged Tuesday with attempted deliberate homicide. Justice of the Peace Michael Swingley set Cain’s bond at $40,000 and ordered a mental health evaluation. Swingley did not enter a plea and requested a public defender. His arraignment in District Court has not been scheduled.

Cain called police on Saturday and acknowledged wrapping his right arm around his girlfriend’s neck. He said she scratched the back of his neck during the assault.

The woman told police she believed Cain was trying to kill her. Court records say she was missing two artificial teeth that she said were knocked out during the assault.
