RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Richmond Sheriff’s Office says an inmate who died at the jail in July accidentally overdosed on heroin.

The sheriff’s office tells media outlets that investigators believe a former inmate smuggled heroin into the Richmond City Justice Center.

Shawn Samuel Jr. was found unresponsive in his cell on July 15 during a routine check. The sheriff’s office says Samuel was pronounced dead following unsuccessful attempts to save him.

Samuel was one of three inmates who died at the jail during a 72-hour period in July.

The sheriff’s office said last week that 38-year-old Javon Antoine Morris died of coronary artery atherosclerosis. Investigators are awaiting results of autopsy and toxicology results for 29-year-old Zachary E. Tuggle.
