DENVER (AP) - A man wanted for an armed bank robbery is dead after being shot by a police officer in downtown Denver.
The shooting happened near the state capitol and just steps from city hall during the busy lunch rush on Tuesday.
Police chief Robert White said a task force had been following the suspect, who was wanted for a robbery which had occurred some time ago. Officers tried to arrest him when his vehicle was parked, and several shots were fired. No officers were injured and no one else was in the suspect’s car.
White didn’t say what prompted the officer to open fire and says it’s too soon to know whether the suspect also fired shots.
Brenda Johnson, who works nearby, says she heard three shots and saw the man slumped in the driver’s seat.
