NEW YORK (AP) - A 53-year-old man has been arrested on a murder charge in the death of a man at a New York City homeless shelter.

Police on Monday announced the arrest of William Smith, who is also suspected of slashing a cabbie.

The body of 56-year-old Marcus Guerreiro was discovered Friday in a blood-soaked bed at the city’s main intake shelter for homeless men in Manhattan.

Hours earlier, Smith is suspected of slashing a livery cab driver in the neck when the cab arrived at a hotel in Queens.

Police say Smith tried to rob the driver, then fled but left his wallet behind. The driver was hospitalized in stable condition.

It wasn’t clear if Smith had a lawyer who could comment on the charge.
