MIAMI (AP) - Two elephants from the Virginia Zoo are headed to their new home in South Florida.

Media outlets report officials say Cita and Lisa are scheduled to arrive Tuesday morning at Zoo Miami.

Zoo Miami spokesman Ron Magill says the move comes after the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recommended that the animals be kept in herds of three or more in order to better support their overall health.

Cita is almost 48 years old and Lisa is 42 years old.

Both elephants will join two other elephants, Peggy and Mabel, who are 40 years old.

Magill says Zoo Miami is the only zoo in the continental United States that’s located in a sub-tropical climate where the elephants can remain outdoor year-round.

The pair will make their public debut May 20.
