CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Charlotte police say they have shot and killed an armed man who pointed a gun at them.

Police were called to a report of a man threatening to kill himself at a convenience store around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

A police report says the man pointed a gun at officers, who shot him.

Police spokesman Keith R. Trietley said in a statement the victim was 41-year-old Sylasone Ackhavong.

The report said Ackhavong died on the way to Carolinas Medical Center.

Trietley said officers Olin Lester and Derek Rud shot the man. Lester has been with the department since 2000. Rud has been with the department since 2005.

Both men are on paid leave while the department’s internal affairs bureau investigates.

The race of those involved was not immediately available.
