Matt Kuchar and Ernie Els decided late to play. … Bryson DeChambeau was able to save a sponsor’s exemption by tying for fourth in Hilton Head last week. His exemption for the Valero Texas Open went to former University of Houston player Curtis Reed.

Notes: Lydia Ko is the defending champion at the Swinging Skirts. She has only finished out of the top 10 in one title defense in her LPGA Tour career, a tie for 55th in the Canadian Women’s Open in 2014 when she was going for her third in a row. She won it the following year. … Ko will be going for her third straight victory at Lake Merced. … Minjee Lee (19) became the fifth player to win twice before turning 20. The others are Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson, Marlene Hagge ad Sandra Haynie. … Canadian teen Brooke Henderson tied for 10th in Hawaii for her seventh straight top 10. … All nine LPGA Tour events this year have been won by players 23 or younger. … Michelle Wie missed the cut last week in her hometown event, running her drought to 32 straight LPGA events without a top 10 dating to the 2014 season finale in Naples, Fla.

He tied for 29th a year ago. … Guan Tianlang is making his 2016 debut in a professional event. Guan, who make the cut in the 2013 Masters at age 14, is still an amateur. He made the cut only four times in 13 professional events last year. … The field includes 52-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez, who is making only his fourth European Tour start this year.
