SOLEDAD, Calif. (AP) - Soledad police have arrested a man suspected of stealing a car with a 2-year-old Monterey County boy inside then ditching the car at an abandoned shed with the toddler still in a child-safety seat.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1qCNszZ ) Tuesday that the abduction last week prompted a statewide Amber alert before the toddler was found about seven hours after he went missing.

Soledad Police Chief Eric Sills says 27-year-old Carmen Rogelio Maldonado was arrested on suspicion of auto theft, kidnapping and attempted murder.

The boy was abducted when his father left his car running in the driveway with the boy inside and returned briefly to the home shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday. The boy was not injured. It was not immediately known if Maldonado has an attorney.
