DETROIT (AP) - A man has told a Michigan television station that he is responsible for a crime that led to another man’s conviction and 10-year imprisonment.

WNEM-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1SXJcSK ) that Jaawkawa McGruder says he wants to clear his conscience and that he and two others committed the armed robbery and carjacking in 2004 in Genesee County.

A federal judge released Omar Pouncy from prison last month, overturning the convictions.

Pouncy was 18 and acted as his own attorney because a county judge would not let him hire a lawyer.

The federal judge found Pouncy’s waiver of counsel was involuntary because he was forced to choose between an unprepared defense attorney and representing himself.

The prosecutor’s office has said it would appeal the federal ruling. It declined to comment on the WNEM-TV story.
