NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Shell says it plans to move some jobs from New Orleans to Houston as part of plans to cut its global workforce.

The company told Nola.com ‘ The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1WBMEbh ) that relocations this year would affect less than 5 percent of its New Orleans workforce. The oil company has about 1,900 workers based in One Shell Square in downtown New Orleans, so 5 percent translates to fewer than 95 jobs.

On Monday, the newspaper reported that Shell employed about 2,300 staff and contractors in New Orleans last year. That number is down to 1,900 this month.

The company started cutting jobs last year due to low oil prices. Shell seeks to eliminate 6,500 jobs worldwide.

Shell says it intends to maintain a presence in New Orleans over the long term.
