FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Fontana authorities say a car theft suspect detained by witnesses and security guards died before police could take him into custody.

Officials say police were called to the parking lot of Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Monday following reports of a hit-and-run crash.

The driver reportedly tried to run from the scene but was wrestled to the ground by witnesses and handcuffed by hospital security officers.

According to investigators, the suspect picked up a rock and tried to hit one of the witnesses.

The San Bernardino Sun newspaper says (https://bit.ly/1Nklx28 ) once police arrived they learned the suspect wasn’t breathing. He died in the hospital’s emergency room.

The death is under investigation.

Police say the car the man was driving had been reported stolen out of Bloomington.
