MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Mounds of trash and plastic left on Miami Beach by some of the thousands of people who attended a weekend raft “Floatopia” event has officials wanting to cancel it for good.

Mayor Philip Levine and Comissioner Michael Grieco both said they would work to halt the event, which has grown from a few hundred participants on South Beach in 2012 to several thousand. Grieco posted a video of the trashed beach on his Facebook feed calling it a travesty.

The Miami Herald reports (https://hrld.us/1SMu4qV ) that Floatopia’s future in Miami Beach will be discussed at a city commission meeting April 27.

Floatopia organizers posted an online statement decrying the trash left on the beach and saying the event’s goal is to treasure the beach.
