TAMARAC, Fla. (AP) - A woman in South Florida has been injured after authorities say she was struck by a car while trying to get her dog out of the road.

Multiple media outlets report the incident happened early Monday.

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Gina Carter says the unidentified victim was walking three dogs when one of the dogs, a Pomeranian, got off the leash and ran into the road.

Carter says the woman stepped into the road to retrieve the dog and was hit by a vehicle.

The dog was pronounced at the scene.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Deputies say she is expected to survive.

The two other dogs were not hurt.
