WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police say a woman was killed and a man was injured when they were struck by an Amtrak train while trespassing on railroad tracks in Wallingford.

The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. Tuesday near Old Colony Road. The couple was hit by a Northeast Regional train headed to Springfield, Massachusetts, from New Haven.

Police say 29-year-old Robert Webb suffered a severe hand injury and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment. The woman, 24-year-old Brittaney Tine, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one on the train was hurt.

Police say it wasn’t immediately clear why the couple was walking on the tracks.

Lt. Rick Homestead says he hopes that this incident serves as an example of the dangers of walking along railroad tracks.
