PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix firefighters found nobody inside a car in a canal though the driver who got out had said she didn’t know the whereabouts of a passenger.

Fire Capt. Ardell Deliz (deh-LEEZ’) says the driver said she fell asleep at the wheel Wednesday morning before driving the car into the canal but was able to get out safely.

Deliz says crews used a ladder truck’s bucket to reach the mostly submerged car to check it and then broke the car’s rear window and confirmed nobody was inside.

A Police Department spokesman, Sgt. Jonathan Howard, says impairment was likely a factor in the accident.

The incident occurred near North 39th Avenue and West Whitton Avenue.
