BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A man accused of beating a cat to death at an animal shelter in Brookhaven has been arrested.

Media outlets report Jody Cothron is charged with animal cruelty in connection with the incident that Brookhaven police say happened Friday at the Animal Rescue League.

Shelter president Lu Becker tells The Daily Leader (https://bit.ly/1NAOphv ) that Cothron came to the facility and asked to see the cats available for adoption.

The cat caregiver was outside tending to some dogs at the time of the attack. When the caregiver returned to the building, officials say Cothron left.

Rescue officials say they found the injured adult cat along with blood splattered across the room. The animal was taken to a veterinarian and later died.

It isn’t immediately clear if Cothron has an attorney.
