SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) - Police say an Atlanta man who was hiding from authorities in a ditch repeatedly punched a police K-9 with a set of spiked brass knuckles upon being sniffed out.

Sandy Springs police spokeswoman Sgt. Forrest Bohannon tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (https://on-ajc.com/1NABRXp ) that 25-year-old Jonathan Wimbs was arrested Monday after being accused of breaking into a car outside a Sandy Springs home.

Responding police were able to track Wimbs’ scent to a wooded area. Officer Michael DeWald’s dog, Rock, was released to search for the suspect. Police say the K-9 found Wimbs, who punched the dog about six times with a set of brass knuckles.

Wimbs faces several charges including destroying or causing serious or debilitating injury to a police dog.

The K-9 officer returned to work Tuesday on limited duty.
