HAVERTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A suburban Philadelphia police department says a 39-year-old officer has died from a sudden illness.

Haverford police announced the death of officer William Albertus on Tuesday. Chief John Viola tells Philly.com (https://bit.ly/22Ni12c ) the seven-year department veteran suffered a medical emergency on April 10 while playing ice hockey in a police league.

He died of natural causes after being hospitalized for a week.

Albertus was married with three young children.

Viola says he was a great family man.

He served for three years with the Philadelphia Police Department before joining Haverford’s force.
