DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-area job placement agency is partnering with a utility and an energy services firm in a household appliance recycling program.

Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit’s Green Works is expanding the program in time for Friday’s Earth Day observance.

Green Works will recycle old, working refrigerators, freezers, room air conditions and dehumidifiers donated by DTE Energy customers. Solutions for Energy Efficient Logistics will pick up the appliances.

The program keeps appliances out of landfills. Steel, plastic and other recyclable materials will be processed and sold to steel mills and other organizations that can reuse them.

Revenue from the sale of raw materials will provide military veterans with jobs, training, education and placement through Goodwill Industries.

DTE Energy customers can receive rebates for their appliances.
