MERLIN, Ore. (AP) - An 18-year-old man who vanished while swimming in the Rogue River is presumed drowned.

Josephine County authorities say Michael Kirman was swimming with four other teens just downstream of Hellgate Canyon on Sunday afternoon.

Kirman tried to join two friends in swimming across the river before deciding to turn around. In distress, he called for help and went under. The water temperature was 53 degrees.

Sheriff Dave Daniel tells the Grants Pass Daily Courier (https://is.gd/RjKV95 ) that the search was called off after three divers failed to find Kirman.

The sheriff says there were no signs of alcohol use.
