SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has proposed an ordinance that would bar landlords from discriminating against people paying rent with legal non-wage sources of income such as Social Security benefits.

The Seattle Times reports (https://goo.gl/Ayt2Lf ) Murray sent the City Council the measure on Tuesday.

While it’s illegal in Seattle to discriminate against those paying rent with federal Section 8 housing vouchers, Murray’s proposal would give various protections to tenants and prospective tenants paying rent with money not made from fixed job wages but from other income including child-support payments, veteran’s benefits and more.

The policy was one of 65 recommendations made last year by the mayor’s Housing Affordability and Livability Advisory Committee.
