SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities in Spartanburg County are investigating the discovery of a human skull and some bones.

A sheriff’s office report said the remains were found in woods off Interstate 85 Monday night.

Officials are conducting tests to try to identify the person.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger says it’s too soon to say whether foul play was involved.

Clevenger said the remains were found about 20 yards from the road in heavy woods near Cornerstone Baptist Church. The coroner said there was no clothing found in the area or anything to indicate someone might have been living in the woods recently.

Clevenger said it might take several weeks to determine who died and how.

He said he’s checking with other local police agencies to find out whether they have any missing person cases.
