BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - University of Vermont police are expecting several hundred students to gather for 4/20, an unsanctioned annual marijuana smoke-in on campus.

While some students will be lighting up, others will be taking part in a counter-event - a 5-kilometer race hosted by a substance-free living environment. UVM said about 800 people have registered for the race.

Police say the 4/20 smoke-in has grown in recent years, with 300 to 400 students turning out last year.

Police say last year they issued a handful of civil violation tickets for marijuana possession and some students faced UVM misconduct charges.
