WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say the pilot of a small plane that crashed shortly after take-off in central New York has died.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s office says 37-year-old John Balio of Frankfort died Sunday at a Boston hospital where he was being treated for severe burns.

Deputies say Balio and one of his passengers managed to get out of the plane after it crashed near a small airstrip in Westmoreland last Monday.

Balio was injured when leaking fuel ignited as he tried to rescue another passenger, 76-year-old James Kasperski of Rome. Kasperski died of burns and other injuries the day after the crash. The other passenger, 31-year-old Amanda Odell of Rome, was also injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by federal officials.
