DEWITT, Ill. (AP) - The Champaign County coroner has identified human remains found in a central Illinois lake as missing Urbana woman Ashley Gibson.
Coroner Duane Northrup says the confirmation was made during a Monday afternoon autopsy. Northrup says information that police developed while investigating Gibson’s disappearance was consistent with how the remains were found. He says that includes that “the remains were suspected to be dismembered.”
Champaign police say the remains were pulled from Clinton Lake near DeWitt on Sunday afternoon. Police have been looking for the 24-year-old since she was last seen April 17. Her mother reported her missing April 19.
Police previously searched a home in Champaign in connection with the case. Gibson’s death remains under investigation and authorities say DNA test may be performed later.
