Family Dollar said it is investigating a video circulating online purporting to show a New Orleans cashier refusing to serve a gay woman.

Melissa Langford said she was in the checkout line Friday at a Family Dollar on Canal street when she overheard the cashier making offensive comments about gay people, The Times-Picayune reported. After Ms. Langford asked the cashier to stop and identified herself as gay, she said the cashier refused to ring her up.

Ms. Langford posted videos on Facebook showing a heated exchange between the cashier and a man, whom Ms. Langford claimed came to her defense.

The cashier was eventually replaced by another Family Dollar employee, who allowed Ms. Langford and the man to check out, The Times-Picayune reported.

“Whether I’m right or wrong, [the cashier] shouldn’t be treating a customer this way, and she can’t deny people service just because she feels like it,” Ms. Langford told the paper.

Bryn Winburn, Family Dollar’s public and media relations manager, told The Times-Picayune in an email, “We take incidents like this very seriously. We have a Code of Ethics in place that ensures inclusion for customers and associates and helps to ensure good customer care.”

Family Dollar said the ethics code “specifically forbids unprofessional conduct and comments on sexual orientation, among other matters.”

“Any activity that goes against this code is simply not how we expect our stores to do business,” the company said. “This situation is currently under investigation.”

Ms. Langford wrote on Facebook that she is organizing a “peaceful protest” Wednesday outside the Family Dollar.

“Everyone is welcome. All I ask is that there is no yelling, or bad energy. We don’t even need signs. We can just blast some Cher and make out,” she wrote.
