MONTCLAIR, Calif. (AP) - Fire officials say a blaze that erupted at a metal recycling business in Montclair quickly burned five structures and threatened a handful of nearby homes.

The Montclair Fire Department says flames erupted at the Coast Metals recycling business shortly before 2 p.m. Monday.

TV news video showed huge plumes of grey smoke billowing into the air as firefighters poured streams of water onto the flames.

The Daily Bulletin newspaper (https://bit.ly/1XdCP18) reports two homes and three detached garages were destroyed in the blaze. Montclair Fire Marshal Chris Hayes said one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

More than 100 people in a nearby motel, mobile home park and apartment buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Montclair is about 35 miles east of Los Angeles.
