NEOGA, Ill. (AP) - Construction will soon begin on veterans’ memorial in Neoga’s Jennings Park in central Illinois.

Volunteers spent two years raising $62,000 for the monument which will bear more than 1,000 names of people from the Neoga area who served in the U.S. military dating to the Civil War.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette and (Charleston) Times-Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1PQrRZw ) the project resulted from organizer Diana Foor’s attendance at a presentation about building community unity. Committees formed and residents indicated they wanted a veterans’ memorial.

The area will be a “walking park” with tablets in various locations carrying the veterans’ names.

Community members submitted names of any honorably discharged veteran and the group did its own research.

A donated battlefield cross will be added and a cannon in the park will be refurbished.
