MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Senate President Pro Tempore John Campbell will not be running for re-election in the fall.

The Democrat announced Monday that he is taking a new job as executive director of the Department of State’s Attorneys and Sheriffs.

Campbell, a lawyer who has served in the Senate for 16 years representing Windsor County, says the time is right to start a new chapter of his life and to open the role of Senate president to new leadership.

Democratic House Speaker Shap Smith also has said he will not be running for re-election in the fall.
