VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - State police say an 8-year-old girl was killed when she was trapped in her bedroom during a fire at her family’s central New York home over the weekend.

Troopers say Andrea Brown called 911 to report her home was on fire and she was trying to get her six children to safety. Fire crews got to the two-story home in Vernon around 3:50 p.m. Sunday and found it engulfed in flames.

Brown told them one of her children wasn’t accounted for, but firefighters couldn’t get past heavy flames and smoke on the first floor.

The body of Zoey Brown was later found on the second floor.

Andrea Brown and her other five children were taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
