SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Nearly three dozen dirty but otherwise healthy dogs found inside an abandoned Southern California house are being cared for at a shelter.

Greg Beck of San Bernardino County Animal Care and Control says the 34 German shepherd mixes were found Monday in the foothill city of Highland.

Beck says many of the dogs are matted, and some have behavior problems, but all are in good health. He says they all look alike and are probably related.

The owner has 10 days to come forward before the animals will be offered up for adoption.

Beck says county officials will investigate why the homeowner abandoned the property.
