TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A female giraffe that suffered a broken leg at the Toledo Zoo has been euthanized.

The zoo’s assistant director of animal programs says the 1-year-old Masai giraffe, Asha, was in quarantine Saturday when she fell as she was moving between two stalls.

Randi Meyerson says the giraffe broke her right hind leg.

Zoo workers euthanized the giraffe on Sunday after tests indicated she had a severe compound fracture that couldn’t be repaired through surgery.

The giraffe had arrived from the Santa Barbara Zoo in California on March 27 to join the zoo’s herd as a breeding female.

Species survival program officials have been notified of the giraffe’s death and are expected to find another young female giraffe to join the herd.
