PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is ready to meet with President Barack Obama’s selection to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Collins said she was looking forward to the one-on-one meeting Tuesday in Washington with Merrick Garland. She said it’s a good way to start assessing his qualifications.

Unlike most of her GOP colleagues, Collins has said that the Senate should follow the “normal process” including personal meetings and a Judiciary Committee hearing.

But the Republican leaders of the U.S. Senate continue to insist there will be no Judiciary Committee hearing until the president elected in November makes a selection next year.
