PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - The Riverside Fire Department says a horse that was airlifted out of a ravine near Palm Springs last weekend had to be euthanized after the rescue.

The horse, named Spirit, was one of two that fell down a steep cliff and could not return to the trail.

One horse was euthanized at the scene before the city of Riverside’s horse and large animal rescue team organized Spirit’s rescue by helicopter.

But the department said Tuesday that the horse later had to be put down due to an injury and the onset of kidney failure.

A third horse involved in the incident did not require rescue.
