GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Rangers completed its sobering, four-year journey back to the top level of Scottish football following financial problems by clinching promotion from the second tier on Tuesday with five games to spare.

Rangers beat Dumbarton 1-0 at Ibrox to guarantee winning the Scottish Championship.

The Glasgow club, which has won Scotland’s top-flight title 54 times, was relegated to the country’s fourth and lowest tier in 2012 as punishment for building up large tax debts that led to the club’s collapse. Rangers achieved two straight promotions, before needing two seasons to get out of the Championship.

It’s been a dark period for a club that has a world-record number of domestic league titles, and also 33 Scottish Cups, 27 League Cups and the now-defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.
