LAS VEGAS (AP) - A police report says a 31-year-old man killed two neighbors who tried to help and also shot at his mother, but missed, before engaging Las Vegas police in a gunbattle that left a police dog dead from friendly fire.

James Craig Simpson is described as behaving erratically after arriving at his mother’s home with a handgun before dawn last Thursday. He told her he thought people were following him.

Simpson’s mother told police he feared people were in a car in the garage and were going to hurt him.

She told police he shot 31-year-old neighbor Branden Hughes and attacked Hughes’ mother, Felicia Simone Wimberly-Hughes, as they approached the open garage door.

Police critically wounded Simpson, who remained hospitalized Tuesday while his lawyer, Nicholas Woolridge, obtained a court order to visit him.
