RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond woman had to be hospitalized after being attacked by two dogs while walking in the Jackson Ward neighborhood.

Richmond Animal Care and Control tells local media that 58-year-old Teresa Key was on her way to work Sunday morning when two dogs attacked her. The dogs were a male and female Cane Corso Mastiff.

Key’s relatives say the woman was alone for about 45 minutes when a witness eventually saw her and called police. Richmond police say an officer was able to distract the dogs to get them off Key, but opened fire when the animals turned on him.

The officer fired two shots, killing the male.

The female dog ran away but was captured by animal control.

Key was taken to a hospital with skull fractures. As of Monday, she remained hospitalized. Her injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.
