SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The Simpsonville City Council has suspended the city’s police chief for 30 days without pay, but is refusing to say why he is being punished.

The council voted Monday night after spending more than four hours behind closed doors, but didn’t tell the audience what they were voting for.

The city then released a statement Tuesday reporting Police Chief Keith Grounsell’s suspension. It called the decision a personnel matter and said no details would be released.

Simpsonville hired Grounsell in 2012, then fired him a few months later.

Grounsell was given his job back in 2014 when several new people were elected to city council. Simpsonville agreed to pay him $25,000 to cover his lack of medical insurance and contributions to his retirement plan while he was without a job.
