IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa City schools superintendent says documents containing information about students were improperly disposed of at a recycling center.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (https://icp-c.com/1qrEaHh ) that the documents included personal information about the kids and their parents and were found March 19 at City Carton Recycling by an Iowa State student who took them and notified the Iowa Education Department.

Iowa code and the Iowa City district policies require that records containing personally identifiable information remain confidential during storage, disclosure and destruction.

District Superintendent Stephen Murley says the documents from Grant Wood Elementary were improperly handled when staffers purged old paperwork. He says some of the material got mixed in with the recycling instead of being shredded.

Murley says district administrators are reviewing proper disposal processes with staff members.
