BRYN MAWR, Pa. (AP) - Thousands of Villanova University students have taken to the streets to celebrate the men’s basketball team’s first NCAA championship title since 1985.

A 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game Monday night propelled the Wildcats over the North Carolina Tar Heels 77-74, sending students rushing from Villanova’s arena, The Pavilion, onto a nearby commercial strip where pubs and restaurants festooned with balloons and banners were packed with revelers.

Police in riot gear stood by as celebrants shouted and chanted wildly. Radnor Police say they’ve arrested three people and some others have suffered minor injuries. There also were reports of some students scaling a light pole and others creating small bonfires.

Local roads and the Route 476 exits around Villanova University have been closed temporarily.
