SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A former jail administrator with four decades of law enforcement experience is taking over as Chatham County’s new sheriff.

John T. Wilcher was sworn in during a ceremony in Savannah on Tuesday, a week after he won a runoff election to serve the remaining months of the late Sheriff Al St. Lawrence’s term. St. Lawrence died from cancer last November.

WSAV-TV reports (bit.ly/1SzXGYF) Wilcher retired as Chatham County’s chief jailer in 2014, after nearly 40 years at the sheriff’s department. He says becoming sheriff had been a “lifelong dream.”

Wilcher is taking office as the sheriff’s department is under close scrutiny for several deaths at the jail, including the 2015 death of Mathew Ajibade (ah-jeh-BAH-dee). He died in a cell after being shocked with a Taser while in restraints.
