INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police say a southern Indiana man shot by officers after pointing a shotgun at them in Indianapolis has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Indiana State Police said in a news release Tuesday that Douglas Gaultney of Knox County suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and lower body.

Police have said that the standoff began March 31 when Gaultney barricaded himself inside a van as officers for the town of Speedway tried to arrest him for violating probation on a marijuana charge. According to police, when officers used tear gas and an armored police vehicle to try to force Gaultney to surrender, he left the van and pointed a shotgun at officers.

State Police say the coming days are critical to Gaultney’s recovery.
