POLSON, Mont. (AP) - A fire burning at a tire recycling plant near Ronan sent smoke billowing over Flathead Lake and the Mission Valley.
KERR-AM reports firefighters used foam in an attempt to beat back the blaze that was burning in a large pile of tires at the Tire Depot early Friday. Crews also used dirt and clay to cover the burning tires.
Authorities told the Missoulian Friday afternoon they were on their way to having the blaze under control.
The Tire Depot is the same recycling center where a blaze burned unchecked in 2001 until the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assumed management.
Ronan Fire Chief Mark Clary says this fire is not as large as the last one. He says the EPA has been called again.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
