SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California’s campaign finance watchdog is investigating a state lawmaker whose opponent accuses him of illegally coordinating with an independent campaign committee.

The Los Angeles Times https://lat.ms/2aLpErw reports that the Fair Political Practices Commission probe concerns whether Assemblyman David Hadley was wrongfully working with a political committee that’s spent more than $292,000 supporting him.

The complaint against the Torrance Republican is not unusual in an election year, however. FPPC reports show 144 complaints have been filed this year, about a quarter of which were investigated.

The Times reports that Hadley’s Democratic Assembly opponent, Al Muratsuchi, alleged the coordination in early July. Muratsuchi contends that a consulting firm used by both Hadley’s campaign and big-spender Spirit of Democracy links the two.

The consulting firm, Presson and Associates, has denied wrongdoing.
