GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer rig on Interstate 10 west of the Phoenix area early Monday morning, closing the eastbound lanes of I-10.

The Department of Public Safety says the pedestrian had been involved in a prior collision and wasn’t ejected from his vehicle during that accident but stepped into a traffic lane before being hit by the big rig.

The fatal accident occurred at Milepost 105, which is about 20 miles west of the Loop 303 freeway on the western fringe of the metro area.

Traffic was exiting eastbound I-10 at 339th Avenue to get around the closure. A detour took traffic to Salome Highway and then to Baseline and Palo Verde roads to return to I-10.

Westbound traffic is unaffected.
