FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A sheriff’s office in Virginia says a man was killed at a crash scene when he fired a gun at deputies and they returned fire.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Monday that deputies were responding to a report of a crash in the Fredericksburg area around 2 a.m.

The caller said a vehicle traveling at high speed had jumped the median, crossed the road and stopped.

When deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office says no one was with the vehicle, but they saw a man nearby.

Officials say the man had a handgun and he fired at the deputies as they approached. Officials say deputies returned fire, striking the 65-year-old white man, who died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The deputies weren’t injured.
