SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Police in Springfield are sponsoring several events in 11 separate neighborhoods throughout the western Massachusetts city as part of National Night Out.

The Republican newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/2asCypt ) the annual event seeks to improve the relationship between individual police departments and the residents that they serve as a means to combat crime and drug use.

National Night Out events are planned for Tuesday in 11,000 communities across the country and Canada, as well as at U.S. military bases around the world.

Springfield Police citizen liaison Kathleen Brown says the event is a night for America to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity.

Each event planned in Springfield will feature free food and drinks in addition to games and other activities.
