TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (AP) - A spokesman for American Express says the company is laying off as many as 170 employees in Utah.

Spokesman Dan Clayton told KSL-TV (https://bit.ly/2bfJwBU ) Tuesday that anywhere from 150 to 170 positions will be eliminated at the company’s customer service center in Taylorsville.

Clayton says laying off service employees who work with clients over the phone will lower costs and increase efficiency.

In an email, Clayton told KSL that several employees will be eligible to remain with American Express as part of a home-based service team. He wrote that employees who don’t stay on will be eligible for separation pay, assistance finding a new job and some continued benefits.
