SALEM, Mass. (AP) - Bail has been lowered for a 19-year-old Massachusetts man accused of accidentally shooting and killing a Miami man.

The Salem News reports (https://bit.ly/2aLxeT6 ) a Salem Superior Court judge on Tuesday reduced Justice Galarza’s bail from $25,000 to $5,000 at the request of his attorney.

The Beverly resident faces manslaughter and weapons charges in the April 9 slaying of 21-year-old Christian Merced.

Prosecutors say Galarza was showing Merced a handgun that he thought was unloaded when the gun went off, striking Merced in the chest.

Prosecutor Christina Ronan called the event tragic but said that Galarza was reckless, pointing out that he fled the scene after the shooting.

Galarza’s attorney said his client only ran because family members told him to do so.

Galarza is due back in court Sept. 28.
