DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) - Police have identified and charged the driver who crashed into a Dewey Beach restaurant, causing a massive fire that destroyed the eatery.

Dewey Beach police Sgt. Clifford Dempsey says 36-year-old Michelle Small of Wyoming, Delaware was speeding and driving under the influence when she lost control of her car and plowed into Ed’s Chicken & Crabs early Tuesday.

Small, who was pulled from the wreckage before the restaurant became engulfed in flames, has been charged with DUI and other offenses.

Dempsey says Small was first treated at the scene for minor injuries, but she became unresponsive while in police custody and was taken to a hospital. It’s unclear whether Small has an attorney.

No other injuries were reported.

Owner Ed Riggin says he does not expect to rebuild the restaurant.
